You can put one of these devices together with some sensors and a relay for minimal cost. Assembly is fairly easy and can typically be handled by anyone who can follow some simple instructions, modify a piece of track to hold the sensors, and solder a few wires.

Carrera 30352 Digital 132 Control Unit - FasLaps supports digital slot car racing with this Carrera Digital Control Unit.
